Hole of Jericho - Hyams the worst
"End of Days" by Peter Hyams
According to the Book of
Revelation, Satan must appear on earth as a man and shag a woman chosen at birth to be the Antichrist's
mother (no, not Marilyn Manson's), just before the start of the new millenium, or so they say. But Jericho
(??!??) Cane (Schwarzie) is there to get in this poor devil's way. And... that's about all there is to
it. And it's as stupid as it sounds. Our mouths watered by the spectacular trailer and soundtrack, we
were expecting an entertaining blockbuster. How wrong we were! The list of Peter Hyams's previous mischiefs
already tempered our excitement somewhat: Presidio, Time Cop, Sudden Death!!! Our worst fears came true
when we saw the movie itself: of course, the worst is Arnie, who's about as expressive as a boiled turnip.
The only truly impressive special effects are already shown in the trailer, the rest is very traditional:
lots of running around, shooting and machine gun-toting. As far as the soundtrack is concerned, you get
to hear about 30 seconds of it (in all), at low volume, and the "original" score plagiarizes The Omen's,
as usual. Gabriel Byrne (as Satan) is the only convincing actor in this mess, despite (unvoluntarily)
hilarious lines. But the biggest error is that this is all taken very seriously, when it could have been
saved had it been more tongue-in-cheek. By the way guys, the 3rd millenium begins on January 1st, 2001,
not 2000.
