A few months only after their gigs opening for Slipknot, the british nu metal quartette is back in France
: it's time to reflect with Mark Mynett on the following of "Trinity", their third album, as well as
his feelings about it, after its release. Tonight, after Earthtone 9 and Misery loves Co., Kill II this
is a star. Mark speaking.
-Since the last time we met, your new lp has been out and very successful
: today, are you satisfied with the reviews you've got for it ? -Mark : Yes, it's a hard album, it's
a very hard album to follow up "Deviate", which, as it came out, was a very fresh and new sound ; and
"Trinity" is not that far from "Deviate", so that's why the english reviews weren't too good. But in
general I'm really happy with the reviews : in France, they've been very very good...
-And now,
looking back, are you totally satisfied with this LP or are there things you would change ? -Mark
: I'm happy with it, but I wish we have had more time to get the album together, to write it, the stress
around the album was very difficult, there was a lot of pressure from our record label, from the magazines
and from the band itself to better "Deviate", which was the vision, to better "Deviate" sonically, the
production, the guitar sound, the voices : all of it turned around this big question : does it better
"Deviate" ? I think that "God on drugs" is better than any song on "Deviate" : more energy on "Trinity",
more highs and lows with this album, where we were very conscious of not repeating ourselves, even in
the acoustic parts and the voice, it's completely different.
-What do you think about the legal
battle around the Napster site and MP3 with Metallica about downloading music for free ? -Mark : It
concerns me, yes, and what I've been told by a lawyer is that it's in fact a benefit for musicians, because
eventually every time you download the song, the musician will get royalties, every time. But at the
moment, that's not happening, and so to be honest I don't know nothing about it.
-And it's known
that if you have a record on tape and you're a fan, you'll buy the record when it comes out, so there's
no loss for the bands... -Mark : Yes, I completely agree with that.
-If not, playing live through
the net, it is something which interests you ? -Mark : Oh yes, very much ; we've not been there yet,
but we would like to !
-Are you tempted, like people from Pantera, Tool , Napalm Death, to do
side projects ? -Mark : If the right situation comes along, then yes, but now Kill II this is consuming
me, so not at the moment !
-On stage, you have no particular look, unlike many bands today, including
Marylin Manson, Slipknot, black metal bands,... : do you think, as a fan and as a musician, that heroes
must look like everybody, close to people and easier to identify with, or at the contrary be cult figures
like Ziggy Stardust, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Manson... ? -Mark : It depends on how do you feel personnally
: for me, the most important thing is to feel comfortable with what you are, and Marylin is obviously
very comfortable with that image. I wouldn't. We just concentrate on the music, that's the main thing
for us, the emotions through Kill II this, not some kind of sick fashion thing. Bands like Coal Chamber
or Static-X have all the background in the world but not the music to back it up, and when you put the
CD, the music won't count. Slipknot is different, they're amazing live, the album is superb, they back
up the music with the image, it was fantastic to tour with them.
-It's the third time I see you
in France in 2 years : so I think you enjoy playing here ? -Mark : It's great to play in France :
the food is absolutely superb, the wine and the people, and it's great how the kids come to the concerts,
like yesterday in Lyon, where kids were jumping up and down from back to front
-Something
more to say about "Trinity" ? -Mark : Yes : people ask about the actual subtitle of the album, and
that's about the contradictions in life, within life and in the world in general ; for instance, you
look at the 20th century, and the technological advance is purely amazing, man goes to the Moon and during
this time one third of the world is starving. There's a contradiction in men, with this technology which
would make life easier and more comfortable and yet the 20th century was the most systematically cruel
and murderous in history, with Hitler, PolPot and so on ; that's what "Trinity" is reflecting, those
contradictions in life, within religions too, the central messages of christianity being lost, the believing
in God, the infinite love, Eternity, all those contradictions are reflected in "God on drugs", man turns
his back on God
-Next step ? -Mark : A video for "God on drugs", some festivals in England,
and talks with the Megadeth management to tour with them in the States, where "Trinity" is gonna be released
: so America could be next step for us. Visible Noise is a very small label, so it will probably be another
one in America. USA are the plan !
